History Walk from The Heritage House
to
The Town Picnic at Purissima Ball Fields

In June 2024, the Town's History Committee sponsored a walk from the Heritage House (next to the Council Chambers at Town Hall) to the annual Town Picnic, which was being held that afternoon at the Ball Fields on Purissima Road.

1.  The walkers assembled outside the Heritage House where Carol Gottlieb of the History Committee welcomed the group of hikers and outlined the course of the planned hike.

The fence between the hikers and the rear side-wall of Council Chambers is temporary pending the installation of new utilities for Town Hall and The Heritage house.

2.  The start of the walk - at the front of the Heritage House where the history of this building is being summarised for the attendees.

3.  The walkers proceed to the open air section of the Heritage Park

4.  Here the attendees get to see and hear about the old farming equipment that dates back to the early "agricultural era" of the area that became the Town of Los Altos Hills.

5.  The farm equipment includes this old orchard sprayer with a gasoline-powered pump, as used in the days when this area was part of one of the world's most productive orchard areas.

6.  The walkers proceed to Esperanza Drive directly behind Town Hall to look at this house - the former home of Arthur Fowle, one of the Town's founders and who donated some of his land to the newly incorporated Town for for purposes of building a Town Hall.

7.  The original Fowle Home has been lovingly preserved over the years by a succession of owners.

8.  Continuing down Concepcion Road, the walkers encounter the original gates at the former entrance to the Shumate Estate.

9.  A closer look at what used to be the main entrance to the Shumate Estate.

10.  The walkers continue down Concepcion Road and soon turn right onto Viscaino Road where they come upon the "new" entrance modeled after the original main entrance to the Shumate Estate.

11.  Continuing up Viscaino and over the top to descend towards the Ball Fields on Purissima - we get a view of the Tennis Courts and Horse Barn of the Fremont Country Club.

12.  A little bit further along Viscaino we also get to spot the historic Martha Lynn Water Tower near the Horse Stables. (Center of picture - further details about this "Tank House" may be seen at the Library of Congress website.)

At the bottom of the hill we will reach our destination of the Ball Fields on Purissima Road where the Town's annual picnic is being held.
